Not-Your-$5 Ginger Shots (GF + V)

Spending $5 on a miniature “wellness” shot is hard to rationalize.

And luckily, buying those viles is not the only option.

As the first recipe of 2023, I’m taking (ginger) shots to celebrate! Since ginger shots can be expensive, here’s an easy recipe to make your own… In fact, this amounts to about $1 per serving.

While ginger is widely known for its digestive effects, it also increases serotonin and dopamine levels (“feel good” hormones). Lemons are high in vitamin C and pectin, a soluble fiber that can lower blood sugar by slowing down the digestion of sugars.

If you choose to add turmeric, it may be worth it. Turmeric has an active compound called curcumin, which has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.  In order to experience the full effects of curcumin, consuming it with black pepper enhances the absorption of curcumin by 2,000%.

Ingredients

  • 4 peeled lemons
  • 2 peeled ginger sticks
  • 200 mL water
  • Optional: honey, black pepper, and turmeric root/powder

Directions

  1. Blend all ingredients on a high setting.
  2. Pour over a fine mesh strainer.
  3. If it’s too thick of a mixture, consider adding water, orange juice, or apple juice to the mix.
  4. Refrigerate in a bottle for up to 5 days.

Enjoy this shot in the morning to stir up your digestion. I personally like to add some boiling water and treat it as a tea. Alternatively, enjoy it as an afternoon boost – perhaps instead of your caffeine kick.
